We’ve been committed to increasing the safety and sustainability of our portfolio by proactively anticipating regulatory requirements, meeting evolving customer needs, and fostering accelerated innovation.
This is why, over a decade ago, we launched our Portfolio Value Program (PVP)—a systematic and transparent assessment tool of the sustainability performance of our products across their life cycles.
Anchored in our purpose, PVP integrates sustainability as a core driver of product innovation and development, enabling us and our customers to lead the transition to a more sustainable world. By evaluating our portfolio through environmental, social, and economic criteria, PVP helps identify sustainable solutions and create value across the supply chain.
The evolving landscape of sustainability means that PVP is continuously updated to remain consistent with global trends and standards. Aligned with the Portfolio Sustainability Assessment (PSA) framework from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), PVP also aligns with the European Safe and Sustainable-by-Design initiative, ensuring that our program meets the highest global benchmarks.
Through PVP, we substantiate our sustainability efforts, continuously drive portfolio improvements, and foster collaboration within the value chain. This approach adds value by embedding sustainability and innovation into every product decision. PVP categorizes our product portfolio into four classifications:

PVP process overview
PVP is integrated into Clariant’s idea-to-market process. We ensure that all innovation projects undergo an early-stage sustainability assessment based on key sustainability criteria. This approach allows Clariant to pinpoint the sustainability impact and advantages of each project, enabling us to recognize exceptional performance before commercialization.

Clariant experts carry out the PVP screening process by reviewing each product and solution in a personalized digital tool. The assessments are conducted by small multidisciplinary cross-functional teams, including both Corporate Functions (e.g., Environment, Safety & Health Affairs, Global Product Stewardship) and Business Units (e.g., Marketing & Sales, Research & Development/R&D). PVP considers a set of 39 criteria which reflect the most material topics for People, Planet and Performance across all life cycle phases (upstream, production, use phase and end-of-life).
