Exolit™ EP 150 (LP)
Exolit EP 150 (LP) is a reactive, halogen-free flame retardant with high phosphorus content. It represents a sophisticated solution if UL 94, V-0 in combination with a high glass transition temperature is required. It reacts with the epoxy groups of the resin and the Exolit EP 150 (LP)-modified epoxy resins can be cured with most known curing agents. The product is soluble in commonly used solvents as water, DMF, DMSO, MEK, methoxypropanol and acetone. It has been especially developed for applications in thermosetting epoxy resins. Epoxy laminates with Exolit EP 150 (LP) pre-modified epoxy resins were successfully tested in E&E applications under IPC 4101. Moreover the product can be used without pre-reaction of epoxy resins in a one step curing process for some hardeners. Its low viscosity profile makes it - in addition to its application as flame retardant (FR) in epoxy laminates for the E&E sector -to the preferred FR solution in general composite applications. It can be used for infiltration processes due to the liquid character and will not block the mold with the glass or carbon fabric / cloth. Compared to other reactive flame retardants it has a much higher phosphorus content and therefore smaller dosages are sufficient to achieve the required flammability.Compared to DOPO (= Dihydro oxaphosphaphenanthreneoxide) chemistry about half of the amount of Exolit EP 150 (LP) is needed to obtain UL 94 V-0 test results. Especially in combination with the synergists melamine polyphosphate (MPP) and melamine cyanurate (MC) the performance can be drastically increased.

Exolit EP 150 (LP) as reactive flame retardant for epoxy resin modification, If it is used for the modification of epoxy resins, 15 parts of Exolit EP 150 (LP) are sufficient to obtain a phosphorus content of 3,8 % in the resin (table 1). If it is used in combination with synergistic flame retardants like melamine cyanurate or MPP the Exolit EP 150 (LP) content can be further reduced and 8 parts of FR in combination with 92 parts of epoxy resin are sufficient to obtain a UL 94, V-0 (1.5 mm) in the final hardened product (phenolic cure).

Exolit EP 150 (LP) 15 25.4
Resulting P-modified epoxy resin [EEW ca 286] 100 3.8
Table 1: Example for epoxy resin modification with Exolit EP 150 (LP) resulting P-modified epoxy resin. The obtained EEW and wt.-% P depends on the amount of Exolit EP150 (LP) that is used for the modification.
For the epoxy resin modification with Exolit EP 150 (LP) standard equipment can be used. After pre-heating the epoxy resin to 130°C. Exolit EP 150 is added and an exothermal process is observed. The reaction mixture is heated for an additional time to complete the reaction. Depending on the used epoxy resin it can be of advantage to add a catalyst system (for additional information about catalysts please contact Clariant). If the downstream processing steps tolerate solvents it can be of advantage to add some solvents (i.e. aliphatic ethers) during the cooling process to avoid time consuming resolubilizing in a later processing/formulation step.

Packaging
Exolit EP 150 (LP) is supplied in following packaging units:
25 kg PE drums (9 drums per pallet)
Storage
Room temperature, closed container, conditions leading to the formation of the toxic anhydride should be avoided (temperatures > 100°C in combination with high vacuum for a long time, i.e. dehydrating conditions).
Minimum shelf life is 12 months from the date of shipping when stored according to the said conditions.
