Sunliquid plant in romania produces cellulosic etanol on a commercial scale obtained from agricultural residues
Clariant sunliquid® plant is built on a 10-hectare area, in Podari, Dolj County and has an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of cellulosic ethanol. The agricultural residues used as raw material are sourced from local farmers, who become part of the supply chain, with long-term benefits for the development of sustainable agriculture.
The cellulosic ethanol produced using the innovative sunliquid® technology, from agricultural residues such as wheat straw, is an advanced, truly sustainable and carbon-neutral biofuel. It can be used on the existing cars infrastructure and is part of the European Union's pollution control regulations.
The plant in Podari is creating new jobs as well as business opportunities that will bring economic growth potential to this rural area. Through this investment, Clariant shows that the commercial production of cellulosic ethanol based on sunliquid® technology is both technically and economically viable, with tangible long-term benefits.
Farmers growing cereals have the opportunity to turn the straw left on the field, as a residue of agricultural activities, into a profitable resource, in the long run, by concluding a partnership with Clariant.
